What is vegan?

Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, but also in clothing. A follower of the diet or the philosophy is known as a vegan.  The term was coined by Donald Watson in November 1944.



Is it hard?

Sometimes, but theres endless choice of vegetables and fruit, and plenty of meat substitutes. At first you might struggle, but as time goes on it gets easier and easier. You even start noticing how many places over vegan options.

Can I be partly vegan?

Of course! It will be hard for some people since meat is so much more accessible. You can only do your best, and any day you cut down on meat intake is a plus for the planet.

Do vegans miss anything?

Vitamin B12 would be the main one but supplements are available in health food shops. Protein can be obtained from beans and legumes. But if you are worried ytou should consult your doctor.

What is not obviously vegan?

Here are some common ingredients that are of animal origin
  • Gelatine (boiled animal tissue such as bones, skin, cartilage and ligaments)
  • Casein (milk protein)
  • Cochineal (food colouring made from powdered insects)
  • Rennet (enzyme from a calves stomach, used in cheese making)
  • Lactose/Lactic acid (can be from animal or plant origin)
  • Apocalypse Noodles

    What can I use instead of cow’s milk?

    Most supermarkets, health food shops and organic stores stock alternatives such as soy, almond, oat, and rice milks.

    Can I still eat out at restaurants?

    Of course! Firstly there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan restaurants, and most restaurants - even heavily meat ones - usually have at least one vegan option, and a lot of the time they put real effort in creating something.Of course some cuisines like Indian have the most options, and many others like Mexican have so many parts you can just drop the meat/cheese, who doesn't love a burrito!
